Werder Bremen signs Marco Grüll from Rapid Vienna

First new one for next season

Werder Bremen has announced the first new signing for the 2024/25 season: Austrian national player Marco Grüll signed a contract with SVW on Monday that is valid from July 1st. This is possible because the 25-year-old’s working paper at Rapid Vienna ends on June 30th. The left winger is therefore moving on a free transfer.

The winger, who was still playing amateur football at the age of 20, is now fulfilling his dream of moving to one of the top five leagues. “It is a great honor for me to be able to wear the SV Werder Bremen jersey from the summer and to be part of this team. “I’m ready to give my best and continue my positive development to help the team achieve its goals,” explained Grüll, who moved to Rapid from SV Ried on a free transfer in 2021, for whom he has scored 65 goals in 117 games so far was involved.

In Bremen, Grüll, who was also linked to Mainz 05 and Union Berlin over the course of this winter, will be the third Austrian in the squad alongside Romano Schmid (24) and captain Marco Friedl (25) and the 14th in the club’s history. Werder also wanted to bring in the offensive force in the winter transfer window, which has been closed since Thursday, but was not prepared to pay the price demanded by Rapid. From July 1st, the Bremen team will have a dangerous winger with Eren Dinkçi (22, Heidenheim) returning on loan and Grüll for the 2024/25 season.

“We have been following Marco’s path for a while now. He has developed very positively in recent years and has aroused interest on the transfer market – not least in the last transfer phase. We are therefore very pleased that we were able to convince Marco of our sporting concept and his perspective with us and that he will strengthen our team from the summer,” said license manager Clemens Fritz.

Rapids sports director Markus Katzer said: “From Marco Grüll’s point of view, this decision is absolutely understandable, even though we would of course have liked to have kept him at the club longer. Since I took office a little over a year ago, there have been discussions about an early contract extension, as well as repeated offers from foreign clubs for an early transfer. As professional as Marco is in training and games, this exchange was always just as professional and that is precisely why I am convinced that he will be at his full potential for us until the last second. I wish Marco Grüll all the best for the next stage of his career and hope that we can often look forward to good performances and victories for Rapid together until May.”
