Twedo goalkeeper will remember the victory over Dalen for a long time. Goalkeeper stops penalty and is injured from the field

Thanks to the 2-1 win over fellow countrymen Dalen, Twedo no longer seems to have to worry about relegation from the second division. Twedo goalkeeper Rick Menting was in the spotlight for several reasons.

Stumbling and with his gloves off for a while, Rick Menting compliments his fellow players after the 2-1 win against Dalen. Twedo’s experienced goalkeeper was substituted in the 52nd minute due to a painful ankle. Anyone who sees him walking with a limp afterwards fears a long absence. “No, nothing broken,” he reassures. “I’ll play again on Sunday. A mild sprain, I think. ”

At the time of substitution, Menting had completed seven minutes that will remain with him for a while. First he is the celebrated man by stopping Dalen player Marijn Verdoold’s penalty at 1-1. And to make the story even better, he also takes the promising rebound from striker Tijmen Venhorst. A little later he lands unhappily and his ankle gives out. Teenager Daan Aalderink took over from the thirty-something and kept his goal clean for the rest.

Bravado

The injured Twedo goalie played a leading role in the regional derby in Southeast Drenthe with his stopped penalty. Because that moment turned out to be decisive. After the missing Daler kick from 11 meters, the home team came out on top. It was Jurben Visser who scored the winning goal about twenty minutes before the end of the match, making it 2-1.

The PhD student therefore added three more points and no longer seems to have to worry about relegation from the second division. In fact, in Veenoord people even dare to look up carefully. “Maybe the top five is feasible,” Menting said with bravado. “This season is going better than expected. Moreover, we have dangerous and fast attackers.”

Beautiful solo

Twedo’s most experienced man was referring in particular to Iwan Immink. After 21 minutes of play, the attacker on the right got his hands together on the sports park with a beautiful individual action. Immink received the ball in his own half, put his first opponent aside via a block and with a technically gifted dribble he passed another two opponents. A simple slide was the final piece of the 1-1, because moments earlier Wouter Eiting had given Dalen the lead.

Trainer Martin Drent van Dalen recognized the beauty of Immink’s goal, but also noted that his defenders could have done it smarter. “You actually have to commit a foul,” he said. “We have played against Twedo three times this season (the locals also met in the cup, ed.) and each time this player was their most dangerous man.”

‘We’re dropping out’

While Twedo set maintenance as an objective at the start of the season, Dalen expected to be able to compete for the top places. The practice now is that both teams are in the middle of the second division. Due to Dalen’s defeat, the top four is out of sight. “We’re dropping out for the time being,” Drent concluded with disappointment. “And you also have to be realistic: at the moment we are not good enough.”

The coach used the word ‘failure’ in his analysis of the match. “We all did that. Our positional play and the number of chances created were below par. Twedo played very defensively, purely on the counter. You can call that anti-football, but we have to solve it. And we couldn’t do that. Of course it doesn’t help that the field is bumpy, but apart from that we weren’t good enough.”
