For the first time in the history of Dutch women’s football, a club reaches the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The Ajax Women beat AS Roma 2-1 in front of their home crowd last night and will therefore advance to the knockout phase of the European tournament. “Goosebumps,” says Melvin Kaliey of Ajax Women Fanatics enthusiastically.
“A very special evening,” says Melvin Kaliey a day after the unique performance. The chairman of Ajax Women Fanatics is actually always there. “In the morning the nerves were already running through my body and I could barely eat a bite of food. In the end, this also feels a bit like a reward for our support.”
“Proud feeling”
There were also match tensions among Ajax fan Joëlle de Rover. “If you had told me in advance that we would compete for the top two places, I would have thought you were crazy. Let alone that we would just continue. An extremely proud feeling.”
“When I scored 2-1 just before the end, I ran into my friends’ arms,” says De Rover as the most special moment of the evening. “That feeling is indescribable when your club is so close to such a result. Very proud of those girls.”

In addition to the exciting competition, the lap of honor remains a top priority for Kaliey. “As a supporter group we feel more at home at De Toekomst, where we can form more of a single block. In the Arena we as supporters are more divided and disappear into the crowd. That is why I appreciated it so much when Romée Leuchter made another victory during the lap of honor. times extra cheered for us.”
Involvement
The historic performance of coach Suzanne Bakker’s team is receiving a lot of attention these days. De Rover hopes that this will do something with the commitment to Dutch women’s football. “In England, for example, club football has received a big boost after the good international results. Hopefully that will also happen in the Netherlands. Packed stands at De Toekomst sports park are music to my ears.”

So far, the interest between national and international competitions is still great. Last night, approximately fifteen thousand fans visited the Arena, while only a few hundred interested parties attended the competition matches at De Toekomst. “I think it plays a role in the fact that the Arena is much more attractive to visit,” is a statement from Kaliey. “Matches in the Arena cost a lot of money, but the Classic next week against Feyenoord is in the stadium and of course the quarter-final of the Champions League too.”
Chelsea
Regarding the next opponent in the knockout phase, Kaliey is favored by Chelsea. “A year ago we did well in a practice match against Chelsea, so I would say let the English women come.” The Rover has less preference and is realistic enough that it will be a big challenge for the Ajax Women. “I’m actually hoping for a nice evening in a sold-out Arena.”
Next Tuesday at 1 p.m. the Amsterdam heroines will hear which team they will be drawn against in the next round.
