Former Bayern professional Douglas Costa, who has been without a club since last October, has found a new employer. On Sunday, the 33-year-old signed with Fluminense Rio de Janeiro and is returning to his native Brazil, where he was already under contract with Gremio. His new working paper with the Copa Libertadores winner runs until 2025. Most recently, the right winger is said to have signed with Samsunspor, coached by Markus Gisdol, shortly before he canceled the Süper Lig club at short notice.
Costa left LA Galaxy in the fall and the veteran received the second-highest salary in the squad as a designated player. Since his arrival in 2022, he has played 51 competitive games with the MLS club, in which he scored eight goals and eight assists. The ex-national player recorded the most appearances for a club for Shakhtar Donetsk (203), followed by Juventus Turin (103) and FC Bayern (97).

Fluminense commented on the transfer saying: “Lightning has struck Laranjeiras!” Costa explained: “It’s a unique feeling and something I was looking for. After being away for a while, I wanted to return to Brazil. I think the move to Fluminense is a perfect fit at this point in time. What I’m looking for is what the club is looking for too. Fluminense is a very competitive club that has come a long way in recent years. That’s what I strive for and what I’ve always achieved in my career.” At Fluminense he will play alongside ex-Real Madrid professional Marcelo and former Leverkusen player Renato Augusto, among others.
