Who is Berliner Zazie Beetz?

Zazie Beetz was given a special honor on January 23rd: she was allowed to read out the 2024 Oscar nominations together with 31-year-old actor Jack Quaid (“The Boys”). And the actress certainly looked familiar to many viewers because she starred in the most successful R-rated film of all time – but more on that in a moment.

Zazie Beetz was born on May 25, 1991 in Berlin. Despite their separation, her parents, a German cabinet maker and an American social worker, enabled her to grow up in both the Berlin district of Charlottenburg and the New York district of Washington Heights. Today she has German and US citizenship and also speaks French fluently.

In May 2022, Vanity Fair reported that Beetz was engaged to her writing partner, actor David Rysdahl. They met at an acting workshop and have been together since 2014. The couple already founded a production company called Sleepy Poppy. The wedding took place in 2023.

This is how Zazie Beetz got into acting

She became interested in acting at an early age. Zazie Beetz attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York until 2009, where she was able to gain her first experience in the theater field. After studying French and literature, she pursued her acting career.

The German-American celebrated her first major successes with her role as “Van” in Donald Glover’s series “Atlanta,” for which she also received an Emmy nomination. Another big milestone in Zazie Beetz’s career was her role as “Domino” in the Marvel film “Deadpool 2”. She also shone in “Joker” alongside Joaquin Phoenix – in the most successful R-rated film of all time, she played the single-parent neighbor with whom Arthur Fleck thought he had a chance. She will also appear again in the sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux”.

However, Zazie Beetz is not only known for her acting achievements, but also for her clear stance on social and political issues. She actively advocates for equality and diversity in the entertainment industry. She uses her platform (for example on Instagram, where she is now followed by more than 800,000 people) not only for private insights, but also to draw attention to important concerns.
