Co-favorites Algeria failed in the preliminary round of the Africa Cup. The North Africans lost 0-1 (0-1) against Mauritania on Tuesday evening and, as last in Group D, have to travel home early. Yali Dellahi (37th) scored the only goal and ensured the country’s first win at the Africa Cup of Nations and their first place in the knockout phase.
Mauritania qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 2019 and was eliminated last in the group phase that year and in 2022. The previous games against Burkina Faso and Angola were lost, but the win against Algeria was enough to advance because Mauritania is one of the four best third-placed teams. For Algeria, who won the title in 2019, it is now the second group exit in a row. Frankfurt’s Farès Chaïbi (21) sat on the bench for 90 minutes in the last game after being used twice before. Dortmund’s Ramy Bensebaini (28) was not part of the squad.
In the parallel game, Angola won 2-0 (1-0) against Burkina Faso and secured group victory. The goals were scored by Mabululu (36th) and Zini (90th + 2).
