The Lauwerzijl Christian Women’s Association honored four jubilees during its annual meeting on Thursday, January 18. They had been members of the association for 30, 50 or even 60 years.
In the past, it was customary to become a member of the women’s association when you moved to the village or got married. All four ladies have lived in the village for at least that long.
These loyal members have also all performed management tasks for one or more periods.
During the winter season the association organizes a monthly evening meeting in the Village Hall. Lectures are given on a wide variety of topics, or there is a pleasant evening with puzzles and games.
At Christmas or Easter there is usually a liturgy followed by a communal bread meal. The season ends with a day trip in the region. The meetings are always attended by almost all members. There are also some members from surrounding villages. Next year the association will celebrate its 75th anniversary.
