EU agreement: Buses and trucks should emit fewer greenhouse gases

BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – Truck and bus manufacturers must prepare for stricter limits on carbon dioxide emissions. This should help the EU achieve its goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050. Representatives of the European Parliament and the EU countries concluded an agreement on Thursday. This applies to heavy commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks.

New city buses should be completely emission-free by 2035. By 2030, they should have reduced their emissions by 90 percent compared to 2019. For trucks and coaches, the negotiating parties agreed on CO2 emissions reduction targets of 45 percent by 2030, 65 percent by 2035 and 90 percent by 2040.

Next, Parliament and the EU states must formally approve the agreement before it can come into force. According to the EU Council, heavy commercial vehicles are currently responsible for more than 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from EU road transport.

The European Association of Automobile Manufacturers described the goals as extremely challenging. It is important, for example, to ensure sufficient charging infrastructure for e-mobility./utz/DP/jha
