Well-known Dutch people will campaign on Monday for the victims of war in Ukraine. Not only will there be a big show on television, the radio will also be dominated by Giro 555 throughout the day. And especially for this promotion, Mattie Valk and Wietze de Jager put an end to their long-running radio quarrel.

Mattie and Wietze reunited

The national radio stations 100% NL, NPO Radio 2, NPO 3FM, NPO Radio 5, Qmusic, Radio 538, Radio 10, Radio Veronica, SLAM! and Sublime all broadcast the same on Mondays. Under the name Giro 555, DJs from all stations in different formations will make radio together for fifteen hours.

Gerard Ekdom (Radio 10) and Sander Lantinga (Radio 538) will kick off between 6.00 and 8.00, but all eyes will be on the duo that will be on the channel afterwards: Mattie Valk (Qmusic) and Wietze de Jager (Radio 538). The two gentlemen formed a successful radio duo on Qmusic for years, until a huge quarrel put an end to that.

No need for contact

Wietze was mad at Mattie five years ago. The gentlemen were negotiating with Radio 538, but Mattie still chose to renew at Qmusic on his own, for ‘six tons and a Tesla’. An unparalleled radio quarrel ensued. The gentlemen have never spoken to each other again, but that is now about to change.

It will take quite some getting used to for the two of them to crawl behind the microphone together again. A year and a half ago, Wietze answered resolutely when asked if he ever misses Mattie. “Closed book, that has now been closed.”

Enthusiastic reactions

The fact that Mattie and Wietze come together for a good cause is received with applause. “It’s great that at such a moment they leave the past behind them,” says AD media journalist Marcus den Blanken.

And Brabants Dagblad journalist Tom van der Meer: “If Mattie and Wietze can do it, then Russia and Ukraine can do it too. There is no clearer signal against war.”
