Actors prepare for show in Koekangerveld waste cathedral: ‘Remains exciting’

“In 2020 we reached a milestone as humanity,” Bruinsma says with a touch of irony. “The weight of things we have made has exceeded the weight of all living things. That was the reason for us to look at how we should build the future. Shouldn’t that be done with the things we have already made? That’s why the waste cathedral, we want to build the decor with used stuff.”

De Wolden has been the cultural municipality of Drenthe for two years and that is why De Peergroup settles in Koekangerveld. The play mainly features people from the community. “I live in Koekange,” laughs actor Anko Scholtens. “It’s nice and close for me and I have a passion for theater, that’s why I participate.”

But some budding stars come from further away to realize their dream, for example from Deventer. “Yes, that is quite a drive,” nods fellow actor Marjoleine van Ede van der Pals. “But this is a special part and that’s what I’m willing to do, and hey, it’s only a 100 kilometer drive.”

She does not yet know which role she will play. “It’s not completely clear yet,” she says with a smile. “But I think we fill in the spaces in addition to the leading roles.”

The actors still have a few months of rehearsals before the premiere starts. “It always remains exciting the first time back on stage, especially because it is such a large production,” Scholtens explains. “Of course it is exciting,” adds neighbor Van Ede van der Pals. “But we will soon be well prepared. Things will go smoothly.”
