The Arctic’s permanently frozen soil, known as permafrost, is melting and threatening to release huge amounts of the powerful greenhouse gas methane. If that happens, it could quickly worsen the climate crisis. A new study in Frontiers in Earth Science discovered large concentrations of methane gas in several wells. The scientists suggest that deep methane can easily migrate to the surface when the permafrost melts.
