Luton (dpa) – Thanks to goal scorer Timo Werner, Chelsea prevented a disgrace in the English FA Cup and reached the quarter-finals with a lot of effort.
Shortly after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich announced that he wanted to sell the club, coach Thomas Tuchel’s football team won 3-2 (1-2) at second division club Luton Town. Coach Jürgen Klopp had to tremble less about Liverpool FC progressing. The Reds were 2-0 up at half-time thanks to a brace from Minamino and eventually beat Norwich City 2-1. Former Bundesliga professional Lukas Rupp scored for Norwich in the 76th minute.
Outsiders Luton Town had previously taken the lead twice in the encounter through Reece Burke (2nd) and Harry Cornick (40th). Saul Niguez (27th) scored the equalizer in the first half against the sixth-placed in the championship. The German national striker Werner (68th) deliberately pushed the ball past the substitute Luton keeper Harry Isted to make it 2-2 after a long pass. Ten minutes later, Werner put on the decisive goal for strike partner Romelu Lukaku (78th) from the right side.
Last year Chelsea lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the FA Cup final. Liverpool lost to Manchester United in the fourth round a year ago.
