Figures from Fluxys also show that last year Belgium exported more than twice as much gas as it consumed itself (357 TWh) to other countries. Germany is the most important destination with 212 terawatt hours. Total gas consumption fell to 152.1 TWh last year, the lowest level since 1997.
A few months ago, about twenty Ukrainian and Belgian organizations, together with Bond Beter Leefmilieu, requested a ban on the transhipment of Russian gas in European ports. They also demanded urgent steps to further reduce Russia’s gas dependence.
