In 2023, 120 natural earthquakes have occurred in or around Belgium. This is evident from figures from the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB). Six earthquakes were felt by the population near our country.
23 natural earthquakes occurred on Belgian territory. The largest earthquake occurred on February 22, 2023 in Maasmechelen and had a local magnitude of 2.0. The quake was not felt by the local population.
Last year, the ROB also measured 3 induced events, 344 explosions in quarries and at least 13 controlled explosions at sea. The latter category is carried out by the Belgian, Dutch or French naval forces to destroy old bombs from the First and Second World Wars.
In 2022, 99 earthquakes were registered in and around Belgium.
