Separation after Wilmots return? Gerald Asamoah leaves the future open

Club legend Gerald Asamoah has left his future at FC Schalke 04 open.

“My contract is running out, I’ll let it happen, wait for a conversation. I can’t say anything more about it,” the former international told journalists on Thursday at the training camp in Albufeira, Portugal.

Schalke had previously announced the return of Marc Wilmots. The Eurofighter from 1997 takes over the position of sports director for the relegation-threatened second division team. His predecessor André Hechelmann becomes technical director.

There seems to be no room for Asamoah, who is currently head of licensing, in this new constellation. He is now “superfluous,” wrote “Bild”.

Several media outlets reported that the 45-year-old is unlikely to continue working at Schalke beyond the summer. He is therefore aiming for a position as sports director at another club. According to “WAZ”, Asamoah could also imagine a move to the 3rd league.

FC Schalke 04: Will the Gerald Asamoah era end in the summer?

According to his own statements, the ex-professional had known about Wilmots’ commitment “for a little longer. I know Willi and have worked with him myself. He brings know-how with him, I’m looking forward to working with him.”

According to Asamoah, an exchange with Wilmots about the exact distribution of tasks in the coming months is still pending. “We haven’t talked in depth yet,” he confessed.

Asamoah played 381 competitive games for Schalke during his playing career. He ended his career in the Revierklub’s second team between 2013 and 2015.

He then worked as a club representative, coach in the youth sector and team manager for the U23 and professional teams. In February 2021 he received his current position – possibly his last at Schalke for the time being.
