Alexander Zverev scored the goal for the quarter-finals for the German team United Cup wide open. Thanks to a hard-fought 4:6, 6:4, 6:3 by the Olympic tennis champion against Adrian Mannarino on Monday (01/01/2024), team boss Torben Beltz’s team took a 1-0 lead against France.
Kerber can make the quarterfinals perfect
Zverev found himself against the world number 22. Mannarino, against whom he had previously won all eight duels, found it difficult to get into the game. After the consequent loss of the set, he threw his racket in frustration in the second round, but then found his game in time. In the decisive set, the German number one was the better player and served too strong for Mannarino.
Afterwards, the second singles of the former world number one Angelique Kerber in her comeback after the maternity break and the mixed doubles. With a win against France, the team around Kerber and Zverev wants to make it to the quarter-finals.
Won the opener against Italy
At the start, Kerber and Zverev together secured the decisive 2-1 win over Italy in the mixed doubles. Kerber had previously lost her singles, and Zverev equalized. The winners of the groups of three teams will surely qualify for the quarter-finals. The United Cup also serves as preparation for the Australian Open in Melbourne. The first Grand SlamTournament of the year starts in two weeks.
