Football podcast | ‘Ajax can no longer gamble with a trainer for next season’ | Dutch football

2023 was clearly not Ajax’s year. The team from Amsterdam was temporarily last in the Premier League, was eliminated from the KNVB Cup by Hercules and is adrift at the top. The choice of Sven Mislintat as technical director and Maurice Steijn as head coach was dramatic. In the AD Football Podcast, Sjoerd Mossou, Maarten Wijffels, Mikos Gouka and Etienne Verhoeff look back on Ajax’s year and the lessons of Feyenoord and PSV.

“Things went wrong at Ajax in the first week of the year,” Maarten Wijffels reflects. “Daley Blind talked about his departure from Ajax and that did not suit Edwin van der Sar. A lot can be traced back to Van der Sar’s indecisiveness.” Mossou: “It is a bizarre set of circumstances. That all started in February 2022 with Marc Overmars’ dick pics. Ajax was at the top of the Premier League, was in the Champions League and then the clusterfuck occurred.”

They continue to talk about the lessons from Feyenoord and PSV, the choices in Amsterdam and more. Mossou, Wijffels and Gouka look back on the football year in a four-part series. Listen to the first episode now via AD.nl, the AD App or your favorite podcast platform.
