Early lead for Essen
In the first ten minutes, both teams were concerned about security, but then SGS took the lead early: After a bad pass in the Bayer defense, Essen attacker Vivien Endemann (14th) got the ball and gave Leverkusen goalkeeper Anna Klink no chance.
With a bit of luck, Leverkusen equalized. During a half-high pass from Leverkusen, the ball bounced off the face of Essen’s Jill Baijings right at the feet of Bayer attacker Dora Zeller (21′), who overcame SGS goalkeeper Kim Lea Sindermann with a lob.
Double chance for SGS just before the break
Essen was then the more active team and had a double chance to take the lead again just before the break. First, Maike Berentzen (45th) failed at Klink, Endemann’s follow-up shot from eleven meters flew well over the goal.
After the break, it was a long time before the first compelling opportunity in the second half: After a through ball, Essen’s Sindermann saved in dire need against Verena Wieder (82′).
Zeller scores in extra time to win
Beke Sterner (99′) had a big chance for Essen in the overtime, but Klink raised his fists just in time. Six minutes later, Leverkusen then struck: Zeller (105th) headed a Bayer corner to make it 2-1. In the 115th minute, Leverkusen’s Lisanne Graewe saw the yellow-red card, but Essen was unable to turn the game around even with a majority.
