FOOTBALL – It should have been a bonus evening for FC Emmen, but it turned out to be a dramatic evening. The team from Drenthe lost the make-up game at home against last-placed Helmond Sport with 1-2.
Two capital blunders preceded the defeat. Just before half time, Jeroen Veldmate headed back to goalkeeper Michael Brouwer too short and just before time, shortly after Emmen had repaired the deficit, Veldmate made another mistake. Twice benefited Jellert van Landschoot, the striker who was also responsible for a win against Emmen in Helmond earlier this season.
position
Due to the defeat, Emmen does not run out of competition for promotion and therefore does not catch up with leader FC Volendam. The gap with the orange shirts remains seven points and the difference with the numbers 3 and 4 in the Kitchen Champion Division (Excelsior and FC Eindhoven) remains at 3 and 5 points respectively, although Excelsior has played one more game than Emmen.
Trusted formation
FC Emmen started without Peter van Ooijen and with Rui Mendes in the base, so that Dick Lukkien did not continue in the formation with which the team from Drenthe beat Jong Ajax last Friday. The ‘familiar’ system produced a very viscous and sleep-inducing first half with only two chances, but those were not spent on Ole Romeny and Reda Kharchouch.
The guests weren’t too keen either, but they did score a goal just before half-time. Jeroen Veldmate headed the ball far too softly back to goalkeeper Michael Brouwer, who then had no chance on Van Landschoot’s bet.
Disallowed goal
The second half started energetically, with Lucas Bernadou replacing Ole Romeny and moments later Metahan Güclü coming for Jari Vlak and that in a formation with two strikers. It gave Kharchouch a few half chances, but Helmond goalkeeper Mike Havekotte saved twice. That same Havekotte had no chance of a bet from Güclü halfway through the second half, but the liberating 1-1 still fell.
Eight minutes before the end, Miguel Araujo headed in from a corner from yet another substitute, Azzeddine Toufiqui, against the ropes. Emmen wanted to go on and on, but was disappointed. The red and white brigade created nothing more and gave the Brabant a goal in extra time.
