German third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken also eliminated Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt in the cup tournament: 2-0. The stunt team has reached the quarter-finals after beating national champion Bayern Munich (2-1) after beating last season’s losing finalist.
Kai Brünker and Luca Kerber scored for home Saarbrücken in the second half. Frankfurt, number 7 in the Bundesliga, ended the match with ten men after a red card for substitute Futkeu Noel.
Saarbrücken already reached the semi-finals of the cup tournament in 2020, then as a fourth division team. A club of that level had never achieved that before.
Dortmund down
Borussia Dortmund has already been eliminated from the German cup tournament. In the eighth finals, VfB Stuttgart was too strong at home 2-0. Serhou Guirassy and Silas Katompa Mvumpa scored after the break for the number 3 of Germany. Title holder RB Leipzig was previously knocked out of the tournament.
