December 5 is fast approaching and time is running out for a beautiful Sinterklaas poem. Michael Janus (49) comes from Vlijmen and he likes a game of rhyming. His website ‘Mick’s Rhyming Dictionary’ now has to compete with the artificial rhyming skills of ChatGPT, but according to him that is no problem at all.
The first visitors have been coming back since the beginning of November Michael’s website, but this last week is extra busy. Michael does not see the rise of AI and ChatGPT as a threat. He has also created an AI generator where people can have ready-made sentences made.
According to Michael, there is a visible difference between the online tools. “My AI rhyming dictionary is not as good at writing texts as ChatGPT, but AI can rhyme better in Dutch. ChatGPT is more useful for a good story where the sentences have to be correct.”
Michael notices that most people still enjoy making their own poem. “Sinterklaas poems are personal, people like to write them themselves. Of course you can use a tool for this: a little from yourself and a little from the internet.” His rhyming dictionary had 1 million page views on Wednesday and the AI version was viewed 20,000 times.
“Think of fun anecdotes in advance that you can use in your rhyme.”
He has already finished his poem for this year. “I make some short rhymes at the last minute for small gifts, but the big poem is already there. Rhyming comes fairly easily to me, but I have sometimes used my rhyming dictionary.”
Brabant’s rhyme boss has a few tips for people who still have to write poetry in the coming days. “If possible, make the rhyme in pairs. That always works very well, because you often quickly complement each other. Also think of some fun anecdotes in advance that you can use in your rhyme.”
Michael’s family is now also a big fan of Mick’s Rhyming Dictionary. Mick’s son is on the hockey team in Vlijmen. “He asked if I wanted to sponsor the team with my rhyming dictionary. Sure I will. So now they all have a sweater with Mick’s Rhyming Dictionary on it.”
