A polar bear was born in Dierenrijk. The birth took place in peace and quiet in the maternity room of polar bear Frimas. Mother and the newborn are doing well.
“At the beginning of November, the mother retreated to the maternity room,” says head zookeeper Stephan Rijnen. “On Tuesday morning we looked at the camera images and we saw a young polar bear. It is now about the size of a guinea pig.”
The mother and newborn will remain safe in the maternity room for the coming months. Rijnen: “The eyes will only open in about a month. The young one must first grow before it can enter the outside world. It is still much too small at the moment.”
The expectation is that the newborn will grow by an average of 200 grams per day in the coming months.
There will be a screen in Dierenrijk on which the maternity room can be seen live. “This way, visitors can experience the development of the young polar bear to some extent,” says Rijnen.
