By the time Queen won the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the Brit Awards on February 18, 1990, Freddie Mercury was already severely affected by AIDS. The 43-year-old went on stage with his bandmates, but did not speak into the microphone – guitarist Brian May gave the acceptance speech.

The last regular Queen album, recorded by Mercury with the last of his strength, was released in February 1991: “Innuendo”. The singer died on November 24th of that year.
