The 1980s opened with a clear reversal of the trend compared to the previous decade, which had seen Milan impose itself in four out of six circumstances. 1980 is the year in which the Milanese derby is staged exclusively in the Italian Cup, because the Rossoneri are in Serie B and feel the challenge in a particular way. Milan plays a derby valid for the second round with a knife between their teeth (they were still the years in which the formula provided for a first group stage), but Eugenio Bersellini’s Inter turned out to be of another level. In that team that has recently returned to Europe that counts after a decade of purgatory, the spearhead together with the Austrian Prohaska (the first foreigner to arrive after the reopening of the borders) is that Alessandro Altobelli who still holds the scepter of the king of the cup bombers with the beauty of 56 goals, of which 46 in the Nerazzurri shirt. Spillo, the author of a winning header in the 66th minute, which will also remain the only goal in the cup against the Rossoneri, decides that very tight derby of 7 September 1980. That victory, however, is the only one for the Nerazzurri, who remedy the elimination in the first round due to two draws and (with Catania and Avellino) and a defeat (against Palermo).
