Spain group winners in European Championship qualification: Serious injury to Gavi

Most valuable teenager in the world

The Spanish national football team has qualified as group winners for next year’s European Championships in Germany. The evening in Valladolid was bitter, however, as youngster Gavi suffered a serious knee injury. In the 3:1 (1:1) against Georgia, the goals were scored by Robin Le Normand (4th minute) and Ferran Torres (55th), who dedicated his goal to Gavi. The Georgian Luka Lochoshvili (72nd) scored an own goal. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (10th) scored to equalize.

Gavi’s knee injury overshadowed the success. The 19-year-old was injured during an action and was holding his knee in pain, which in football quickly raises the suspicion of a torn cruciate ligament. This has not yet been confirmed. The association spoke of a “serious injury”, while some newspapers spoke of information that, according to initial investigations, would indicate a torn cruciate ligament. In that case, Gavi, who has the highest market value of all footballers under 20 in the world, could miss the European Championship tournament in Germany next year.

Rumors then circulated in the Spanish media that those responsible at Gavi’s club FC Barcelona would make allegations against Spain national coach Luis De La Fuente, citing the teenager’s tight schedule and an appearance in the game for the Spanish selection that qualified for the European Championship already had for sure.

Georgia retains its chance of qualifying – Scotland scores another point against Norway

While Spain will be safely in pot 1 by winning the group in the draw and thus avoid hosts Germany for the time being, Georgia could qualify for a European Championship finals for the first time through the playoffs in March thanks to winning the group in the Nations League C4.

Already qualified Scotland scored another point against Norway in Group A after goals from John McGinn (13th) and Stuart Armstrong (59th) as well as an own goal from Leo Østigård (33rd). In the 3-3 draw at Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Aron Dønnum (3rd) and Jørgen Strand Larsen each scored for Norway, who played without Erling Haaland, to take the lead and Mohamed Elyounoussi (86th) to equalize late. BVB professional Julian Ryerson prepared two goals.
