In October 2023, a cybertruck from Elon Musk’s company Tesla was found in California – with dozens of bullet holes. However, the discoverers quickly received an explanation on the social platform X (formerly Twitter).

Holed Cybertruck in California
The futuristic Cybertruck from the tech giant Tesla has already caused a stir several times. After a two-year delay, the Cybertruck will finally go on sale at the end of November, according to t3n.de. There will be a “delivery event” that will initiate the delivery of the truck in the USA, as the stern.de portal reports. And it seems about time, because according to reports from the car portal Inside EVs, around two million pre-orderers were already eagerly waiting for their trucks in July.
But before the vehicle is available on the US market, it seems to have to go through some “tests”. In October, a punctured Cybertruck was found on a highway in Fremont, California. The discovery was filmed and soon ended up on the X platform (formerly Twitter). The video was posted on the account “Tesla Owners Silicon Valley” and showed the truck with a demolished left side. There were more than 70 bullet holes in the driver’s door, side door and rear fender, as the Bild.de portal reported. After a short period of speculation, the Tesla boss commented Elon Musk personally to the discovery. He explained in a post on Platform
The actual name for a “Tommy Gun” is “Thompson Sub Machine Gun”. The name refers to the American inventor of the submachine gun John T. Thompson, as the portal britannica.com explains. Although the Tommy Gun was made famous worldwide by criminals like Al Capone, it does not have exceptional penetrating power with .45 caliber ammunition, according to techradar.com.
Bulletproof windows were not shot at
Although Musk’s post initially seems to provide an explanation, what is noticeable is that the exact reason for the action is not explained. If this was in the spirit of marketing, further questions still remain unanswered. For example, it is questionable how far away the shooter was from the vehicle.
Another unusual feature is the fact that only steel parts of the body were affected by the shots, as reported by electrek. The windows were completely spared, even though the windows are made of Tesla armored glass, as the company states on its own website. This is reminiscent of the incident in November 2019 when Musk first presented the truck. He asked the chief designer Franz von Holzhausen to throw a metal ball at the side window. Despite the alleged shatterproof nature, the glass showed cracks and ultimately broke. At the time, he stated that this would be resolved by the official launch, according to t3n.de. So whether this is the case remains to be seen.
