Wants to call BVB colleague Adeyemi
By continuing his series of goals for the German U21 national team, Youssoufa Moukoko hopes to further promote a call-up to the European Championships. “Everyone who has ever been with the senior national team has that in the back of their minds,” said Moukoko after the DFB youth team’s 4-1 win in the European Championship qualifiers against Estonia. Moukoko scored for the twelfth time in the tenth game in Paderborn on Friday evening.
“I always score the goals here because I get a full 90 minutes. It’s really good for me to get the rhythm. I’m always happy to come here, there’s always a smile here,” emphasized the 18-year-old, who was part of the senior national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and became the youngest World Cup player in DGB history . “Nobody expected me to be there at the World Cup. Let’s see.” Of course, everyone wants to be there at a tournament at home – like the European Championships in 2024. But there is “not yet” an exchange with national coach Julian Nagelsmann.
In the third game under Nagelsmann, the German national team will face Turkey on Saturday (8.45 p.m./RTL). After the 3-1 win against the USA and the 2-2 win against Mexico during the trip to America in October, Nagelsmann wants to continue the upward trend on the way to the home European Championship in 2024 – Moukoko is watching on TV. “We’ll all watch it together and then we hope we can go out for something nice to eat,” said the BVB attacker, “and then we want to win our game on Tuesday.” Then it’s in Essen against the biggest competitor on the way to the 2025 European Championship finals: Poland. Germany has nine points after three games, Poland twelve after four games.

Moukoko wants to speak to Adeyemi on the phone after his U21 cancellation – criticism from Neuendorf
In contrast to BVB striker Moukoko, club colleague Karim Adeyemi (21) skipped the international matches with the U21, unlike in October, because he wanted to stay at Borussia Dortmund in order to get himself in position for more appearances at the club. “I think I’ll talk to him on the phone. I’ll tell him how the game was. I think he was watching too,” said Moukoko about his BVB colleague.
Most recently there was a report that Adeyemi’s rejection was not well received by national coach Nagelsmann. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf also expressed his displeasure about this and gave the coaches free rein for possible consequences. “The coaches have to decide that. It’s a sign of how important he takes this. It’s hard to force him, that doesn’t help the team if you have players you have to drag here,” said Neuendorf on “ProSiebenMaxx”. He believes Adeyemi’s decision was a mistake.
U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo, who was also not enthusiastic, had previously said: “It is clear that Karim would have helped us with his quality.” Neuendorf pointed out that the U21 had always been a springboard. “It’s perhaps a wasted opportunity, I regret that.” Things haven’t been going well for the winger so far this season: out of a total of 13 BVB appearances, he was only in the starting line-up five times, and as a result his market value fell by 5 million to 35 million Euro down.
