Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa and English Premier League club Leeds United have gone their separate ways. The club confirmed the move on Sunday midday after reports from English media including “The Athletic” and the “Guardians‘, both of whom reported that lawyers had been hired to try and resolve the 66-year-old’s season-ending contract with the Whites. A successor has reportedly already been found: Jesse Marsch, who was a coach at RB Leipzig until December and had previously worked successfully at sister club Red Bull Salzburg.
Bielsa has been adored by Leeds fans ever since he brought the club back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years with attractive football in 2020. In 170 competitive games, “El Loco” has collected 1.61 points on average with Leeds. This season, however, the Yorkshire club have been struggling to avoid relegation, having lost four times 17 goals in two weeks, including a 4-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday.

Despite investing around 166 million euros in the squad over the past two years, Bielsa has not been able to support top performers Kalvin Phillips (26), who has been out for a long time this season with a thigh injury, and Patrick Bamford (28; also thigh) to replace adequately. The announcement of Bielsa’s successor, in all probability March, should take place on Monday.
