FC Bayern: Hainer sees Neuer on the best way back into the DFB goal – no rush for extra time

Bayer “simply the best”

Bayern President Herbert Hainer sees goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on the best way back to a regular place in the DFB team. “It looks as if he is already on the way to his former glory. If he has achieved that, there will be no other goalkeeper in the national team who should be in goal – because Neuer is then simply the best,” said Hainer in an interview with the Munich “Abendzeitung”.

The 37-year-old Neuer recently showed again in the top Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund that he is “reinsurance personified” for the record champions. In consultation with national coach Julian Nagelsmann and DFB goalkeeping coach Andreas Kronenberg, the keeper will still be missing from the upcoming international matches against Turkey and Austria in mid-November. “This also has medical reasons. It’s too early now,” explained Neuer, who last stood between the posts for the DFB team on December 1, 2022.

Since then, Marc-André ter Stegen has taken over the regular place in the DFB goal. “I think he is definitely number one at the moment,” Neuer recently said. So far, 2014 world champion Neuer has played 117 games for Germany, while ter Stegen has played 38.

FC Bayern: Hainer in no hurry to extend Neuer and Müller

The goalkeeper returned to FC Bayern’s starting line-up at the end of October 323 days after his skiing accident and the severe fracture of his lower leg. With a view to extending Neuer’s contract, which expires next summer, Hainer appealed for patience. “If everything develops the way it did recently, there’s nothing wrong with it. “We will now give Neuer the time and then the sporting management will sit down with him calmly,” said the club president. With a value of 5 million euros, the goalkeeper is one of the most valuable Bundesliga professionals with an ending working paper.

The same applies to Thomas Müller, who is also only contractually bound until the end of the season. “He is a veteran of the club – there will never be anyone like him again. But there is no rush for Thomas either. “He knows how much we all value him,” Hainer explained about the 34-year-old. After their careers end, he would like to continue to involve the duo at Munich, as it has always been one of the club’s strengths to include players like Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “We’ll keep trying that because it’s good for FC Bayern.”
