The Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum were defaced with paint this evening. “Two people were arrested by security and were handed over to the police,” a police spokesperson said. The police cannot yet say anything about the reason for the graffiti.
The underpass at the Rijksmuseum is covered in red paint in many places – such as the roadway and poles. A few windows at the Van Gogh are also smeared with paint. A police spokesperson said that ‘a few bystanders were covered in paint’.
Fences closed
It is still unclear when the graffiti will be removed. There is a police presence around the museums and parts are cordoned off with police tape and cones. The gates of the passage under the Rijksmuseum are closed on both sides. “They threw chemicals, so that is dangerous to health,” an employee of the Rijksmuseum told AT5.
According to the spokesperson, the graffiti has no influence on the Museum Night that takes place this evening – from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. – at various locations in the city.
