Dogs must be kept on a leash, writes DVHN reporter Jan Westera in an opinion story. Is that a good idea?
Westera is tired of stray dogs jumping on him without asking. So far this has been done by barking, but he is afraid that he will fall prey to a biting specimen.
Not entirely unjustified, because 150,000 people in the Netherlands are bitten by a dog every year, according to figures from the Dutch Kennel Club. More than 30 percent of biting incidents are so serious that a doctor is required.
Westera admits that he is cynophobic: dogs instill great fear in him. No doubt he won’t be the only one. What do you think, is it high time that we protect cynophobes? Is the dog required to be on a leash? Let us know and participate in the Statement of the Day.
