After the Champions League party in Newcastle, Borussia Dortmund revealed defensive problems in the Bundesliga against Eintracht Frankfurt, but demonstrated comeback qualities. Bitter: BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had to go down injured.
On Sunday (October 29th, 2023), Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund drew 3:3 (2:1). Omar Marmoush (8th minute/FE, 24th) scored twice for the SGE, Farès Chaibi (68th) scored Frankfurt’s third goal. Dortmund celebrated the goals from Marcel Sabitzer (45th + 1), Youssoufa Moukoko (54th) and Julian Brandt (82nd).
Thanks to the point, Dortmund now has 21 points and is in fourth place. Frankfurt is in seventh place with 14 points.
Mixed conclusions on both sides
Dortmund coach Edin Terzic drew a mixed conclusion at the Sportschau microphone: “We have the feeling that we haven’t done a lot of things well. Nevertheless, we came back here in Frankfurt, where it’s not easy, and showed again that it’s very difficult to beat us at the moment.”
“On the one hand, there is disappointment” said his counterpart Dino Toppmöller. “Because of the way we played, I think we deserved the win a little more.“
Frankfurt’s Marmoush stresses BVB – the left side is unsafe
Frankfurt started the game ambitiously. Dortmund had defensive problems early in the first half, especially on the left side of Ramy Bensebaini and his supporting central defender Nico Schlotterbeck, there was a lot of space for the SGE.
They played in a 3-4-2-1 system with a five-man chain in defence. When they won the ball, the SGE quickly swarmed out and put BVB under pressure. Chaibi and Aurelio Buta spun down the right – almost three quarters of the attacks came from this side – as did the unstoppable Marmoush.
However, a tough penalty decision against BVB also played a part in the Marmoush double pack. Ansgar Knauff shot at Marius Wolf’s hand from close range (5th). Referee Robert Schröder checked this on the screen and pointed to the spot, Marmoush converted. And later Marmoush made it 2-0 after Buta’s attempt was parried by BVB goalkeeper Kobel.
Dortmund goalkeeper Kobel has to go out injured
Apart from the deficit, it was also bitter for BVB: the goalkeeper, who was so strong in Newcastle, had to go down with an injury, Alexander Meyer replaced Kobel (26th). A few minutes before the score was 2-0, he had Schlotterbeck’s arm hit his face and had a plaster applied to his nose (18′).
Kobel’s replacement Meyer was still the focus in the first half: he lightly touched Marmoush’s foot with his glove in the penalty area, and Schröder initially decided on a penalty kick (38′). And according to the pictures, he took him back because the contact wasn’t enough for him – lucky for Dortmund.
BVB shows Taker qualities and fights back
It became clear afterwards that Borussia Dortmund has intact self-confidence even when they are behind. Niclas Füllkrug set up for Sabitzer, who scored before the half-time whistle. And Hummels just missed the goal (45th + 7th). However, Marmoush had also hit the post in the meantime (45th + 2).
The introduction of Karim Adeyemi and Moukoko for Giovanni Reyna and Donyell Malen (46′) in the second half indicated that coach Edin Terzic demanded more from his team offensively. Joker Moukoko thanked us a little later with the equalizer. The 18-year-old’s low shot went past Füllkrug, who would have been offside if he intervened. Schröder stuck to his decision to give the goal.
Brandt makes up for the fatal loss of the ball
But Frankfurt did more than just resist. Marmoush continued to be an asset and missed a chance early in the second half (47′). Chaibi took the lead again after an interface pass from Ellyes Skhiri after Brandt’s careless backheel loss of the ball.
But he made up for his mistake himself, as Borussia managed to equalize again in the final phase. Brandt used a sharp cross from Joker Adeyemi to make it 3-3 – it was supposed to be the final score.
BVB and Frankfurt only in the cup
Before the Bundesliga continues, both teams will face the second round of the DFB Cup on Wednesday. Frankfurt plays away at Viktoria Köln (8.45 p.m.), BVB hosts TSG Hoffenheim earlier in the evening (6 p.m.).
On the next matchday 10, Borussia Dortmund has their first big top game in the league ahead of them. The Terzic team welcomes FC Bayern Munich in their own stadium (Saturday, 6.30 p.m.). And Eintracht Frankfurt meets 1. FC Union Berlin (Saturday, 3:30 p.m.).
