When Sir Alex took over at Man Utd
In the 1985/86 and 1986/87 seasons both champions came from Liverpool, a great goalkeeping career began in Birmingham and a gigantic coaching career in Manchester. Both seasons are now available in the Transfermarkt database.
In 1986, Liverpool FC dethroned Everton FC as champions of the then First Division, the predecessor of the Premier League. In the following round, Everton was back in first place. For the “Toffees” it was also the last title win in England to date. The top scorer in 1986, England football legend Gary Lineker at Everton with 30 goals, was followed in 1987 by Clive Allen from Tottenham Hotspur with 33 goals. For Allen, it was by far the best season of his career; otherwise, he never scored more than 15 goals in another season.
After a mixed start to the 1986 season, Manchester United parted ways with coach Ron Atkinson after matchday 13. His successor was to remain in office for 26 years and be promoted to Sir in the United Kingdom: Alex Ferguson. The Scot took over the reins at United and won 38 titles, including 13 championship trophies in the Premier League and the Champions League twice, for the first time in the heart-stopping 1999 final against FC Bayern.
Future national goalkeeper Seaman begins his career with relegation in Birmingham
In the 1985/86 season, 21-year-old David Seaman made his debut for newly promoted Birmingham City in the First Division. Seaman played all 42 games of the season. Although Birmingham were relegated again at the end of the season, for Seaman it was the start of a great and long football career. From Birmingham he moved to Queens Park Rangers and in 1990 he joined Arsenal FC, where he was very successful between the posts until 2003 and also became England’s number one in the national team.
