If Whatsapp doesn’t open next week, you may have to buy a new phone

Meta has announced that Whatsapp support will end on old Android operating systems next week.

If you are using a clearly older Android system and you are no longer able to update your phone, you may have to get a new handset soon – at least if the functionality of Whatsapp is important to you.

Whatsapp says on its support page that starting Tuesday, October 24th, Whatsapp will only work on devices with Android 5.0 or higher operating system.

– Before we stop supporting your operating system, we will notify you via the Whatsapp application and urge you to update your operating system a few times, the Whatsapp support pages say.

If you are using a device that is so old that it does not support the latest version of Android or a newer operating system, you must change the phone to a newer one in order to continue using Whatsapp.

Android 5.0, nicknamed Lollipop, became generally available in the fall of 2014.

Checking your Android version

1. Open the phone’s Settings app

2. Select About the phone > Android version
