Clear path to FC Bayern? Kalvin Phillips hints at leaving Man City

Kalvin Phillips is considered a potential winter signing for FC Bayern. The Manchester City defensive midfielder has now spoken publicly about his thoughts on a move.

Under Pep Guardiola, Phillips hardly gets a chance at Man City. There have only been five competitive appearances this season. From the start, the 27-year-old was only allowed to play in the third round of the EFL Cup against Newcastle United (0-1). Otherwise, only short-term assignments are available.

It’s no wonder that the England international has been linked with a move away from the Sky Blues. FC Bayern is considered a possible new employer. Phillips now indicated his intentions to move for the first time.

“I want more playing minutes”

“As a footballer, you always want to play. And of course that’s the case with me too,” he told the TV station “Channel 4 Sport” and added: “I want more playing minutes, and obviously I haven’t had them in the last year and a half get. So that’s a thing that wants.”

Phillips could get the desired playing time that he needs with a view to the 2024 European Championship at FC Bayern. Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel ultimately wants a so-called “Holding Six” for the squad.

João Palhinha from FC Fulham was actually supposed to come to Munich in the summer. However, the deal fell through in the final stretch.

It is not known whether the Munich team would be willing to buy or just loan him in Phillips’ case. What is certain is that Man City would not let the 27-year-old go at a bargain price. It wasn’t until the summer of 2022 that the English champions paid around 50 million euros for the midfielder, whose contract with the top English club runs until 2028.

Palhinha shouldn’t be available much cheaper either. On deadline day, Fulham had called for around 65 million euros for the 28-year-old Portuguese international.
