After the attack in Brussels that left two people dead, France is increasing security precautions for the French national soccer team’s friendly match against Scotland (from 9 p.m. in the live ticker on sportschau.de). The number of police officers deployed for the game on Tuesday evening in Lille, near the border with Belgium, will be doubled, France’s Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced on the day of the match in Paris. In addition, border controls with Belgium would be strengthened.
In France, the Paris terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015 are still remembered, when, among other things, three suicide bombers blew themselves up at the Stade de France during an international match between Germany and France.
European Championship qualification: Belgium against Sweden canceled
Two Swedes were shot dead in Brussels on Monday evening by what investigators believe was an Islamist-motivated man. The national teams of Belgium and Sweden competed against each other in a European Championship qualifier that evening. The game was stopped at halftime after the attack.
The police shot the suspected and initially fugitive perpetrator on Tuesday morning. The authorities said he was a 45-year-old Tunisian who applied for asylum in Belgium in November 2019.
