BVB had already crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday. The self-proclaimed title aspirant, who had to retire from the Champions League early this season, was unable to make up for the 4-2 defeat in the first leg of the second round. On Thursday, the district club only managed a 2-2 (2-1) win against Rangers from Glasgow.
RB Leipzig presented itself quite differently, having traveled to San Sebastián with a 2-2 win in the first leg. At Real Sociedad, coach Domenico Tedesco’s team won 3-1 (1-0). Willi Orban (39th), André Silva (59th) and Emil Forsberg (89th) scored the goals for the Saxons. Now the European trip for Leipzig continues in the round of 16.
Two other Bundesliga teams had previously qualified for the round of 16 in Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen. Both finished the group stage of the Europa League as first and thus escaped the playoff duels.
