Sevilla FC has found a successor after parting ways with coach José Luis Mendilibar. Diego Alonso signed a contract with the Europa League winners until the end of the season. This is the first coaching position in Europe for the 48-year-old, who played 66 LaLiga games as a professional.
The Uruguayan most recently worked as national coach in his home country from the beginning of 2022 to the beginning of 2023. Under Alonso, Celeste scored an average of 2.17 points in twelve games, but the Uruguayans were over after the group phase of the World Cup in Qatar.
Sevilla FC parted ways with Mendilibar late on Sunday evening, reacting to the unsatisfactory start to the season in LaLiga. Across all competitions this season there were two wins, four draws and five defeats. In LaLiga, Sevilla is in 14th place with eight points from eight games. On Saturday there was a 2-2 draw against Rayo Vallecano. In the Champions League, Sevilla only picked up one point in the first two group games against RC Lens (1:1) and PSV Eindhoven (2:2).

Alonso is Sevilla FC’s fourth coach within a year. In October 2022, Julen Lopetegui was replaced by Jorge Sampaoli, who had to vacate his place last March for Mendilibar, who averaged 1.47 points in 30 games. Two mammoth tasks await the new coach after the international break with Real Madrid and Arsenal FC.
