Hockey players Groningen take second competition victory despite card load

The Groningen hockey players recorded their second victory of the season on Sunday afternoon. In Breda, coach Julian Steen’s team was too strong for Push with a score of 2-1.

Last season, Groningen finished the competition fourth with the same number of points as Push. This season, like Groningen, the people from Brabant only achieved one victory in the first four matches. Groningen added a second victory in Breda.

“We were very good, especially in the first half,” Steen said. “We were like that last week, with the difference that we scored now. Although we could have made more than two.”

Hit backhand

Noor Hakker brought Groningen to 0-1 early in the match with a striking backhand. Claire Fischer doubled the score before half-time by cleverly rounding Push’s goalkeeper and then tapping in.

Push’s pressure increased in the second half. Due to yellow cards from Fischer and Floks van der Beek, Groningen played with one player less for a long time, but the team got through those phases unscathed. The tying goal came in the final phase. Push then took the goalkeeper to the side and the Brabanders had opportunities from penalty corners, but the defense and the Groningen goalkeeper held out.
