Drenthe politicians are calling for an Israeli flag to be hung

Israeli flags should be placed at the provincial government building in Assen and at town halls in various municipalities. Drenthe politicians make this call out of solidarity with Israel, which is at war.

On Saturday morning, troops of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas invaded Israel. Hundreds have been killed in the conflict on both the Israeli and Palestinian sides.

“During this act of terror, innocent civilians were murdered or kidnapped. The images show that human rights and international law were brutally violated,” says Henk Middendorp on behalf of the CDA in the municipality of Tynaarlo. He refers to a call from CIDI, an organization that stands up for the interests of Israel and fights against anti-Semitism.

The CIDI calls for the Israeli flag to be flown as a symbol of support. Middendorp therefore requests the Municipal Executive to deviate from the flag protocol and respond to the CIDI’s call. Anita de Rijke of Lijst de Rijke asks the council of the municipality of Assen to hoist the flag or to project the Israeli flag on the town hall.

Harry Omlo of JA21 makes the same request to the Provincial Executive of the Province of Drenthe. He asks for the flag to be hoisted or projected on the provincial government building. “We must strongly condemn terrorist violence against innocent civilians in our democracy and its victims deserve our support.”
