Missing Marie Sophie (14) who was found dead by a woodcutter in Germany appears to have been strangled | Abroad

Marie Sophie had left home to visit a friend on Wednesday around 6.30 pm and was not heard from again after that. A search was launched around midnight. Her body was discovered on Thursday afternoon by a man who was chopping wood in a grove a few hundred meters from the village.

A suspect was arrested that same evening. It is said to be a 20-year-old man from nearby Kassel. According to the German newspaper ‘Bild’, the victim and suspect knew each other and René G. was obsessed with the girl. He is said to have been near where Marie Sophie was found and her mobile phone was in his apartment. He would have previously offered to help search for her.

Autopsy

An autopsy has now shown that the girl was strangled. The spokesman for the Kassel public prosecutor’s office, Andreas Thöne, told ‘Bild’. “The autopsy revealed injuries that can be explained by violence to the neck region. Based on the preliminary autopsy results, the Public Prosecution Service currently assumes that the victim was strangled,” he said.

Forensic experts will conduct further investigations in the coming days. For example, it will be investigated whether the perpetrator administered a narcotic substance to Marie Sophie and whether there are any additional clues as to how she died. It is not yet clear when the results will be known.

In the meantime, the suspect remains tight-lipped. There is no clarity yet about his motive, but according to ‘Bild’ he threatened to harm her: “If I can’t have you, no one can.”
