Alexander Zverev reached the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Beijing. The 26-year-old from Hamburg won against Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6:1, 6:7 (5:7), 6:4 and is now playing against US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev (No. 2) for a place in the final.
For Zverev it was the seventh win in a row in China; last week he won the title in Chengdu. The match against Jarry lasted 2:18 hours. After the bumpy start to the tournament, Zverev dominated the game at will in the first set. The night shift against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (Spain) and the stomach problems from the match against Diego Schwartzman (Argentina) no longer played a role, but Jarry was hardly able to resist either.
It wasn’t until the second round that the game developed into a level playing field. Both players know each other well, it was their third duel this season alone. Jarry won on clay in Geneva, Zverev took revenge on grass in Halle/Westphalia and now also won the first match against the world number 23. on hard court. Jarry was no longer able to counter his break to 4:2 in the deciding set.
Fifth duel with Mevedev
Zverev is meeting Medvedev for the fifth time this year; after three defeats (Indian Wells, Monte Carlo and Rome), he beat his Russian rival in Cincinnati in August. Medvedev is in top form: After losing in the final in New York against Novak Djokovic (Serbia), he beat the highly rated Tommy Paul (USA), Alex de Minaur (Australia) and Ugo Humbert (France) in Beijing.
