Madness at Van Gogh Museum by Pokémon fans: “Don’t sell my ‘Pikachu with gray felt hat’ card”

The crowds of Pokémon fans are enormous at the Van Gogh Museum. Since the start of the special exhibition, in which the grandmaster’s best-known works have been given a special Pokémon jacket, collectors have been infatuated with the museum.

The exhibition brings smiling faces outside, but inside the Van Gogh Museum it can sometimes be quite chaotic. The museum shop occasionally contains a tangle of collectors falling over each other. Once outside again, buyers with hundreds of euros in hand are ready to offer to visitors who come out of the museum with such a ticket.

But most people probably have no intention of selling their specially acquired Pokémon card. “This card is priceless,” said one visitor. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to get it and I think this is the first time they’ve done something like this. So I’m not selling my special ‘Pikachu in Gray Felt Hat’ card.”

Rare

Rare Pokémon cards can sometimes fetch tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros when offered online. The cards associated with the collaboration between Van Gogh and Pokémon can also be found online. “The fact that they printed 75,000 of them could mean that it will be one of the rarest cards of all time,” says a visitor.

The exhibition is being held in the run-up to the museum’s 50th anniversary. The collaboration with the brand, which stems from the TV series and game, should attract a new audience. The Pokémon paintings will remain up until early January.
