Mayor Piet De Groote is not a party leader in Knokke-Heist municipal elections

Secret vote of confidence

Knokke-Heist had a few turbulent weeks following a report by Audit Flanders about possible conflicts of interest. Ex-alderman Kris Demeyere eventually resigned himself because he would be mentioned in the Audit. The report was discussed in the city council on Thursday evening. Due to political unrest, a secret vote of confidence was held on Saturday to decide on the role of Mayor Piet De Groote in the future. The participants in the vote decided that De Groote will not be party leader in the next municipal elections.

Self-questioning party

De Groote said he himself requested the vote. “I wanted clarity about how to proceed. Since many people were unable to attend today, I had asked for a postponement, but that did not happen. I wonder whether this was orchestrated,” says the mayor of Knokke-Heist .

Piet De Groote is said to have been informed by one of the members that the majority does not want him as party leader in the next elections.

New chapter

“Municipal interests Knokke-Heist decided this morning to fully embark on a new chapter. The group emphasizes the importance of positive core values, integrity and continuity and invites everyone to work together for the well-being of the municipality and its residents. This will follow soon. there is more information,” says the first alderman of Knokke-Heist, Jan Morbee.

The mayor of Knokke-Heist also mentioned that he will consider his political future in peace in the coming days.
