THEThe Google search engine celebrates its 25th birthday today. And it couldn’t fail to do so (also) with a special Doodle that incorporates all the logos that have appeared from 1998 to today in an animation that ends with the number 25 instead of the two O’s. The great G of the web was officially born on 27 September 1998 : This is in fact the date when the founders, doctoral students Sergey Brin and Larry Page, established their base of operations, Google’s first office, in a rented garage. The two, who met at Stanford University, created one of the richest and most powerful companies of the new millennium.
The Google Doodle celebrating Google: 25 years and not hearing it
From the beginning they shared the same vision: to make the World Wide Web a more accessible place. And if we consider that the Google home page is the most visited site in the world, with 158 million visits per month on average, we can say that they made it a reality.
Actually Google celebrate your birthday on other dates too. September 4th is the day in 1998 when the request to found the company was presented. While the 7th is the date on which the company was actually founded. The 27th would be the date on which Page and Brin, still students, described their search engine project for the first time in a publication.
What does Google mean? The origin of the name
The name Google instead derives from googol, which simply represents a huge number (1 followed by 100 zeros). The origin of this name dates back to 1920: legend has it that the American mathematician Edward Kasner was walking in the woods with his nephew Milton Sirotta while he was thinking about the name to give to an astonishing number. The answer was Google: twenty years later Kasner cited it, exactly as it was, in the book “Mathematics and Imagination”.
Future-oriented, reflecting on the past
«Today’s Doodle celebrates Google’s 25th year. And while we’re future-oriented here at Google, birthdays can also be a time for reflection. Let’s take a walk down memory lane to find out how we were born 25 years ago», writes Google with a celebratory post on the official blog which offers 25 curiosities about various offices around the world. Like the one in Johannesburg in South Africa where 46 km of beads decorate the atrium. But there are also hives for honey production at the Googleplex in Mountain View. There are currently 200 offices on six continents, the first international headquarters was opened in Tokyo, Japan in 2001, followed a year later in Hamburg, Germany.
