Ukrainian community with us closely follows Russian invasion
Yrina Zbrozhek has lived in our country for twenty years, but she is actually from Ukraine. This morning it was a terrible awakening to the news that Russia had invaded her homeland.
“I can say it calmer now, but this morning was terrible,” she says. “When you see images from Odessa with the sound of explosions, you know it has started. The airport has been hit. I also called a friend there and they saw smoke there too.
Yrina’s mother still lives in Ukraine, but she is now visiting Kortrijk. Her other family is in Ukraine. The unrest surrounding the separatist regions has been going on for eight years, so they weren’t too worried at first, but now it’s all the more alarming.
More soon.
