At the European Cycling Championships in Drenthe, the Netherlands, the German starters Katharina Fox and Lisa Klein narrowly missed out on a top 10 placement in the individual time trial.
In the dominant victory of Swiss top favorite Marlen Reusser, Fox came in eleventh place, while Olympic track champion Klein came in twelfth.
In the men’s race, Max Walscheid came 15th, Miguel Heidemann finished the time trial in 21st place. Victory was surprisingly secured by the 19-year-old Brit Joshua Tarling, who after 29.8 km in 31:30 minutes was a whopping 42 seconds ahead of defending champion Stefan Bissegger from Switzerland. Third place went to Belgium’s top star Wout van Aert (43 seconds behind).
Reusser, who gave up in frustration at the World Championships in Scotland, was 43 seconds ahead of Briton Anna Henderson after 29.8 km and 35:53 minutes. The Austrian Christina Schweinberger came third (44 seconds behind), who won bronze as the best European woman at the World Championships. Fox was 1:27 minutes behind, Klein 1:34 minutes behind.
Antonia Niedermaier had previously won the silver medal in the U23 race. This time, after 19.8 km, the U23 world champion had to admit defeat to the exceptional British talent Zoe Backstedt (18), 58 seconds behind. Backstedt was missing from the World Cup.
