Borussia Dortmund’s group opponents AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.
The host dominated the game after the bitter 1:5 in the city derby against Inter Milan. Milan, with national player Malick Thiaw in defense, was the better team and had some promising chances, but couldn’t take advantage of them.
Newcastle defended with difficulty and hardly managed to counterattack themselves. It wasn’t until stoppage time that Milan’s goalkeeper Maik Maignan had to parry a shot for the first time.
Italy’s champions AC Milan and the English representative Newcastle, newly rich thanks to millions from Saudi Arabia, together with Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain, form what is probably the highest-caliber group in the preliminary round.
