Cercle Brugge loses leadership position after losing to RWDM
Cercle had won its last three matches and was in a good third place with 12 points. Provided a victory in the Edmond Machtens Stadium, the West Flemish could even leapfrog AA Gent and Anderlecht (13 points) and become the provisional leader. Miron Muslic’s team also started excellently. After just six minutes, Kevin Denkey opened the scoring with a striking bang.
But the visitors could not enjoy the lead for long. In the seventeenth minute the scores were level again. Makhtar Gueye, who had squandered a good chance shortly before, put the Molenbeek team at 1-1. Ten minutes before the break, Cercle took the lead for a second time, but Minda’s goal was canceled after a VAR intervention. The teams went into the locker room with an equal score. Fifteen minutes after the restart, the home fans were allowed to cheer a second time. Luis Segovia was in the right place to head Mercier’s corner into the net.
The PhD student was unlucky a little later when Biron hit the post. Cercle tried to grab a point in the final phase, but RWDM held on. Goalkeeper Defourny rolled up his sleeves on an attempt by Gboho in the closing seconds after a nice save. The home team took a third victory of the season and is running smoothly in 1A with 10 out of 18.
