Hummels double pack
Borussia Dortmund averted a defeat at SC Freiburg in stoppage time on the fourth Bundesliga matchday. The Revierklub won 4-2 (1-2) at SC Freiburg on Saturday and turned a deficit at half-time into their second win of the season.
Mats Hummels (11th) gave BVB the lead after a corner. Dortmund were clearly superior afterwards. Lucas Höler (45th + 2) and Nicolas Höfler (45th + 6) made the host fans cheer again immediately before the half-time whistle. Donyell Malen (60th) brought BVB back into the game. Höfler was shown a red card late after a foul (81′). Again Hummels (88th) with a lucky goal in the penalty area and Marco Reus (90th + 2) ensured the late victory.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Serhou Guirassy gave VfB Stuttgart their next win with a hat-trick and exacerbated FSV Mainz 05’s low. The attacker, who was in excellent form, scored his sixth, seventh and eighth goals of the season (56th minute/84th/90th+7) in a 3-1 (0-0) win on Saturday, thus deciding the game, which only had a few highlights at the beginning, in favor of his club. Guirassy is the first striker in VfB history to score eight goals in the first four Bundesliga matchdays – and is currently the league’s outstanding attacker.
The Mainz team, trained by Bo Svensson, put on another uninspired performance in front of 30,500 spectators and remain second to last. Leandro Barreiro’s equalizer (70th) wasn’t enough either.

Four days before the first Champions League game in the club’s history, 1. FC Union Berlin stumbled a bit. The Berliners lost 1:2 (1:2) at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday and suffered their second defeat in a row after the 0:3 against RB Leipzig.
In front of 28,917 spectators in Wolfsburg, Union started strong, but then literally invited VfL to take the lead in the 12th minute. Goal scorer Kevin Behrens lost the ball while building up the game and his Wolfsburg counterpart Jonas Wind made it 1-0 after a nice one-two with Lovro Majer. Only two minutes passed between Robin Gosens’ 1-1 (28th) and Joakim Maehle’s 2-1 (30th). Wolfsburg’s second Danish international scored his goal with a volley just outside the edge of the penalty area after Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, also from Denmark, had initially cleared a VfL corner with a fist save.
With a lightning goal and a dream goal from their own half, TSG Hoffenheim spoiled the 100th anniversary celebrations of their stadium for their new favorite opponents 1. FC Köln and established themselves in the upper regions of the table. The Hoffenheim team remained undefeated in the Bundesliga in Cologne for the eighth time in a row with a 3-1 (2-0) win and secured their fifth win in the process.
Andrej Kramaric with a goal after 50 seconds and Florian Grillitsch with a shot from 55.6 meters (28th) laid the foundation for TSG’s third win in the fourth game of the season. Maximilian Beier, who scored in the third game in a row, followed up (52′). TSG keeper Oliver Baumann played his 300th game for the Kraichgauer in the upper house (to the news).

Even without Dani Olmo, RB Leipzig created an offensive spectacle. The German cup winners defeated FC Augsburg 3-0 (3-0) on Saturday and won their third win in a row. Before the Champions League opener this Tuesday (6.45 p.m.) at Young Boys Bern, Leipzig’s offensive newcomers were particularly impressive in the absence of Olmo (bruise) and captain Willi Orban (torn lateral ligament).
First, Xavi Simons (7th minute) headed in in front of 44,746 spectators to take the lead, four minutes later Lois Openda, who provided the assist, made it 2-0 after a Xavi pass. David Raum (27th) made the half-time and final score with his first RB goal. While RB is in third place in the Bundesliga table, Augsburg remains winless after four matchdays.
